Sister Act

04 May, 2017

One makes a living working out, the other makes a living writing about food. What could they have in common? They’re sisters!

Tanvi Mehra

Tanvi Mehra is wearing our Ivory Cutout Dress.

Tanvi Mehra brings together various forms of fitness, dance and yoga in her super cool and hip space, Tangerine Arts Studio in Bandra. A one-stop place to explore different realms of fitness - be it Hula Hoop, food workshops, meditation, dance and now believe it or not they are conducting a bring your puppies for yoga class workshop too. We can’t wait! She is also a professional dancer and when she is not teaching yoga, you will find her dancing her way through the day. Tangerine has personality, warmth and a soul.

Your morning ritual: Wake up, brush, sit in silence, eat two bananas and head out to teach yoga and this is my routine seven days a week, believe it or not.

Go to fancy dress costume: Moana.

Style/beauty icons: Olivia Palermo.

First favourite film: Home Alone.

Personal motto: You are what you do not what you say you'll do.

Favourite tipple: Matcha tea.

Signature dance: Butt shimmy.

Fantasy dinner party guest list, dead or alive: Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, Coco Chanel, Michael Jackson, Gene Kelly, Audrey Hepburn.

Most loved fairy tale: Little Mermaid.

Inspiration: Nature, yoga, dance, adventure, music, travel, food.

Soundtrack of your life: Tom's Diner by Suzannee Vega and Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai. These may sound absurd but I have performed to these songs a million times as a child, and everyone who knows me always connects these songs to me.

People are surprised that: I have an appetite and that I actually eat.

Favourite destination and three cool things to do: Tulum, Mexico.

1. Explore the cenotes in and around Tulum.

2. Experience a sunrise and a sunset.

3. Attend a beach club party with amazing music in shorts and slippers.

If you could feature in an art work, which one would it be: I don’t know about artwork but to me dance is art and I would love to be a part of a Cirque Du Soleil act. It truly defines art in movement for me.

An Instagram account everyone must follow: @Tangerineartsstudio.

Any fitness and recipe blogs/websites and books you recommend: @wellandgoodnyc.

Your favourite go to healthy recipe: Nut milk.

Would dance a duet with: My husband Rohan, who definitely steals the limelight when dancing next to me with his adorable dance moves.

Favourite feminist quote: She needed a hero so that's what she became.

Purva Mehra

Purva Mehra is wearing our Wildflower Caftan Kurta.

Journalist and co-founder of TheDailyPao.com, Purva Mehra has combined her love for food and writing in this must-read website. She like trees and travel and mangoes in equal measure. She keeps us updated about everything from Kombucha and Kefir milk to Assamese food pop-ups and finding the latest Persian restaurant in town. TheDailyPao.com is our go to place for food trends, culture and events in Mumbai. Also must check out the podcasts, where they chat with interesting folks discussing the city, food and culture.

Favourite hour of the day: 6pm, it signals the end of a work day (alas not always for a digital journalist). I'm inherently nocturnal so my mood generally takes an upturn as the sun starts its descent.

Your morning ritual: Coconut water, a tune by Drake or The Weeknd, yoga with my sister Tanvi Mehra and a platter of fruits that could feed all of Bandra.

Go to fancy dress costume:

1. As the Invisible Man(or Woman). This way you don't have to show up for the party at all, you can spare yourself the stress of dressing up and if you're asked why you were a no-show you can use the cloak of invisibility as a ruse.

2. Alternatively as Hagrid from the Harry Potter series since our weather leaves us with bad hair days on most days.

Style icons: Mira Duma, Mimi Thorisson and Jessica Stein.

First favourite film: Herbie Goes Bananas, The Karate Kid and Mr. India.

Personal motto: I've borrowed it from Roald Dahl, "Lukewarm is no good”.

Best advice: "Pee when you can".

Signature dance: Twerking, if the room is dark enough and I have a corner to myself.

Fantasy dinner party guest list, dead or alive: Peter Dinklage, Novak Djokovic and Charlie Brooker, to supply the GOT finale plot, jokes and dystopian theories respectively.

Most loved fairy tale: Heidi.

Tech must have: My I-pod classic. Life is dull without it.

Inspiration: Many things. Inspiration usually starts with a flight out of Bombay.

Soundtrack of your life: A mix-tape featuring tracks by The National, Radiohead, Death Cab For Cutie, Kendrick Lamar, Ludovico Einaudi, Phoenix, Drake, James Blake and Jamie XX.

People are surprised that: I eat my food and don't merely peck at it as food writers are wont to do.

Favourite travel destination: Don't make me choose. Ladakh, The Andaman Islands and New York are my current top three.

Current fashion obsession: It is and always will be a well-tailored white shirt accessorised with a pin and paired with ripped denims.

A museum everyone must visit: I don't have a favourite. I try to go to one in every city. In Bombay i’d say don’t miss the Bhau Daji Lad.

If you could feature in an art work, which one would it be: Art is great but I rarely remember artworks. I really wish I was a character in a Hayao Miyazaki film like Spirited Away or Howl’s Moving Castle. Animation is my kind of art.

An Instagram account everyone must follow: @thedailypao, @hombre_normal and @mangaday.

Favourite quote: I’d have to be one to have one.

3 books you would recommend everyone to read:

1. Ender’s Game series by Orson Scott Card - it’s so much more than a fantastic body of science fiction.

2. Garlic and Sapphires by Ruth Reichl - she made me want to be a food writer.

3. 1984 by George Orwell and Lord of the Flies by William Golding - both are haunting and horrifying.

Your most memorable meal: I’ve been to a bunch of potlucks lately and the food there cooked by my friends and other home cooks has been great. I wish I could say it’s a restaurant, but nothing I’ve had outside lately has been outstanding.
